The Black Year of Italian Olive Oil


To say that the olive harvest in Italy this year was a “bad harvest” would be a great understatement.

La Repubblica, one of the most influential Italian newspapers, has reported that overall, Italy is producing 37% less olives this year, with 45% less in the regions of Umbria and Tuscany.

The fault is of the wacky climate that has helped the olive fly, the nemesis of Italian olives, to flourish . As La Repubblcia says, “an entire agricultural segment has been brought to its knees in Italy.”

How does this affect Gustiamo? First and foremost, we are mourning, along with our good friend Nicola Bovoli, the loss of his ENTIRE olive production. Yes, you understood correctly. There will be no Vicopisano 2014/15 olive oil. We are treasuring every last drop our 2013/14 Vicopisano olive oil, it is phenomenal.

All of our olive oil producers have had great difficulty. From Ligura to Sicily, all our beloved olive growers have reported heartache. All of our farmers have no choice but to raise the prices of their oil, otherwise they will not be able to make a living. Of course Gustiamo will pay these higher prices. No question.

We all need to stand by Italy’s olive oil producers this year.
