Watch this lovely video below. It was shot in Navelli, Abruzzo, where the famous saffron is cultivated. It is the original footage of the saffron harvest, and the process you can see here is exactly how it is still done today. Remember, to get 1 kilo of the saffron called ‘the red gold of Navelli’, you need to pick 250,000 flowers! Look at the families who pick the flowers at dawn in October. Their backs must be broken! Harvesting saffron flowers is a tradition that the people of Navelli take much pride in passing on generation to generation. But it is very labor intensive indeed!
Add saffron to your pasta and put some extra sunshine on your table and into your life!
We love what you say here Paola, it is why we love zafferano d’Aquila! “The Aquila saffron or zafferano d’Aquila (Abruzzo), cultivated exclusively in the Navelli Valley, is one of the best saffron in the world for its distinctive thread shape, unusual pungent aroma and intense color.”
